Surface Sizing
Surface sizing with starch is a key operation in the manufacture
of many quality paper products that serve a wide range of
market needs. Improvements in surface properties are brought
about by the ability of cooked starch to form a film upon
drying.
Improvements in internal properties are developed by the
adhesive and cohesive nature of cooked starch and its ability
to bond with cellulose fibres. The pasted starch is most
commonly applied by a size press located in the dryer section
of the paper machine, but it may also be applied on the
calender stack.
The cooked starch must have lower viscosity than is obtained
by conventional cooking of unmodified corn starch. This
lower viscosity can be achieved by modification of the starch
during manufacture, or by enzyme conversion or various thermal
and thermal-chemical conversion techniques used on site.
Dynaplak offers several starch products for size press
applications. Our R&D department can help costumers
determine which product would be best for their individual
operation.
